A Summary of Act I Scene i in William Shakespeare's Hamlet

The Watchmen's Encounter

The opening scene of Hamlet unfolds on the night watch platform at Elsinore Castle. Horatio, a scholar, stands with two guards, Barnardo and Marcellus. They have gathered to investigate rumors of a ghost that has been haunting the castle.

The Ghost's Appearance

As the night progresses, the ghost of Hamlet's father, the late King Hamlet, appears. Bernardo and Marcellus are terrified, but Horatio remains skeptical. He urges them to tell the prince, Hamlet, about what they have seen.

Horatio's Plan

Horatio believes that the ghost may have a message for Hamlet. He convinces Marcellus and Barnardo to accompany him to Hamlet's quarters and inform him of the ghost's appearance.

The Break of Dawn

As they prepare to leave, dawn approaches. Horatio urges the guards to hurry so that they can speak to Hamlet before the ghost vanishes.
